This weekend sees the long-awaited Forum on Creative Writing in Quebec at Montreal’s Grande Bibliothèque.
Proceedings get under way on Friday May 6th with a welcome at 4 p.m. followed by the offical Opening and a tone-setting panel discussion on issues affecting creative writing today at 5.30 p.m. hosted by Marie-Andrée Lamontagne that features storyteller Jocelyn Bérubé, novelist Neil Bissoondath, poet and novelist Nicole Brossard and poet Jean Sioui. A reception follows at 7 p.m.

literature in Quebec and abroad? With D. Kimm, Marc Laberge, Jean-Marc Massie,

Session 6 : The new spaces of literary practice, with Fortner Anderson, Simon Dumas, Christine Germain, and Mathieu Lippé. Host: Stéphane Lépine.

The Toronto battle has not yet made its mark nationally, but it should. If Toronto library users and supporters lose this fight, you can depend on it that other municipalities will be encouraged to follow suit. I am a Montrealer, not a Torontonian, but I know this is my battle, too. And I think it’s a battle we should all be fighting.
When it comes to the future of public libraries, we are all Torontonians.
The Tate resurrected my joy. Perhaps a replica or reconstruction may have the tendency to kill the imagination or spirit. Perhaps there is a dark aspect to glorifications and resurrections from cultural graves.

The legacy of 11 September, the rise of radical Islam, and the persistence of revolutionary elements in some of Canada’s ethnic groups is likely to call forth the McGee who took an uncompromising stand against militants within his own ethnoreligious community, who challenged self-righteous political and religions certainties, and who argued for a broad, tolerant, decent, open-minded, and compassionate society in which people did not push others off the path.
